Senior High Academics Program

4 Star Camp students participation in the Senior Academics Program

The Senior High Program is enrichment-based, designed for students entering grades 10-12. It offers a summer filled with enjoyable, motivating classes (see below for list of classes). Our mission is to provide you with the type of experience and mentoring that will foster the personal growth needed to face the special challenges of transitioning to young adulthood, college and beyond. Students enrolling in the Senior High Program will reap a summer of intellectual rewards, self-confidence and new friendships.

Highlights

  • You create your own experience. Choose three classes from a variety of stimulating offerings.
  • Afternoons continue with your choice of activities to include: recreational sports; tennis, golf or soccer instruction, fitness program, SCUBA certification or fine arts workshops.
  • Class sizes remain small. This allows for greater personal assistance from teachers.
  • Private tutoring is also available.

Preparing for College Success

This occurs one night during the session before the evening activity consists of a panel of staff members who answer campers' questions about college admissions, campus life and much more. This is a safe, reliable, first hand account of what to expect about college.

Instructional Period 1

Algebra 2 / Trigonometry

The following core topics will be previewed: functions and their graphs, real and complex number systems, quadratic and higher polynomial functions, exponential and radical functions, logarithm functions and an introduction to trigonometry.

Creative Writing

Explore the fundamentals of writing imaginatively. Each day you will be creating characters, plots and dialogue. Work in your choice of poetry, fiction, drama or essay. By class' end, you will have completed a short story, novel chapter, or a series of poems.

Essay Writing

Does your writing need focus and clarity? Get a jump on college papers by strengthening your writing skills now. This is an expository writing class that includes punctuation review, grammar usage, and spelling integrated into thesis statement refinement, paragraph development and essay organization. Use this class to get a start on your college application essays.

Political Science

An introduction to our nation's institutions and political processes. Key concepts include the origins of American government, voting, political parties, interest groups, Congress, the presidency, and the Supreme Court.

Instructional Period 2

Calculus

The fundamental concepts and techniques of differential and integral calculus will be developed with emphasis on their application in a variety of fields.

Essay Writing

Geometry

This class previews and highlights basic polygon attributes, coordinate geometry, logic, inductive and deductive reasoning, writing proofs, and 3-dimensional figures.

Public Speaking

Often singled out as the #1 fear of adults, this class will help ease your concerns when speaking in front of a group. Skills related to research, organization, expression, voice control, body language and exposition will be developed to augment campers' your self-confidence and decrease those butterflies.

Effective Reading and Study Skills

Prepare for college with this intensive course focused on increasing your understanding of what you read along with time management skills necessary for college life. You'll practice proven reading strategies, note taking, new word recognition, vocabulary development, as well as test taking approaches and setting personal and academic goals.

Introduction to Psychology

This class focuses on the concepts of psychology that have been revolutionary in helping us understand ourselves and others by examining the roots of personality and behavior. Throughout the class, you will be asked to evaluate the validity of theories in light of your own experiences and perform a mini research study.

Instructional Period 3

Architecture

Explore 3-D design. Learn primary principles and skills for structural architecture, landscape architecture, and planning. Tasks involve drawing and design proposal. As well, you will complete the building of a model of your design.

Stock Market Game

What's the difference between stocks, bonds, and mutual funds? We'll teach you about that and much more. Examine the U.S. banking system and stock market and how they work. Follow stocks during the class and receive "money" to invest in "your portfolio".

Survivor

It's a jungle out there after high school graduation. Learn how to survive your post-high school years with topics like balancing a check book, job interviewing, handling credit cards, student loans, car loans, and renting an apartment just to name a few. Everything you need to know but not necessarily are taught.

Human Anatomy & Physiology

Study the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. You will also learn the different parts of the body and how it responds and adapts to physical exertion.
